When I began writing 20+ years ago, my goal was to be published in one of the big “Seven Sisters”; Better Homes and Gardens, Good Housekeeping, Family Circle, Ladies Home Journal, McCalls, Redbook or Woman’s Day. That was likely the goal of many a housewife writer in the 80’s. Of the seven, one has folded (McCalls) but the others are still on my list of hopeful markets.
Of course, if one does not submit to these magazines, then the likelihood of being published by them is pretty much nil.
Last year I had a short “hint” published in Woman’s Day, a hint about how to eat less during the holidays that took all of 5 minutes to write down and send in.
I put a little more effort into the short essay I submitted to Redbook last fall, regarding a wardrobe-related embarrassment. Today I got word it will be published in their June issue.
Two down, four to go.
